Family lawyers for Dongguan's expat and manufacturing families
Dongguan is one of the world's great manufacturing centres, and it has drawn foreign plant managers, quality engineers, buyers and factory owners for decades — from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Europe and beyond. Many have married locally, raised children in Dongguan and built businesses whose value is tied up in equipment, leases and company shares. When a marriage ends, those facts shape almost every legal question.
Please note: we do not have an office in Dongguan. We serve Dongguan clients from our Shenzhen office in Nanshan District, which is within easy reach by car or train, and by video. When it helps — for a first meeting, document signing or a court hearing — our lawyers come to you.
Family matters we typically handle for Dongguan clients

- Child custody and visitation, including arrangements where one parent works long hours on site or travels frequently. See child custody in Dongguan.
- Child support calculations where income is irregular or paid partly through a business. See child support in Dongguan.

How we work with Dongguan clients
Most matters begin with a free, confidential 30-minute video consultation. After that, we agree a plan and a fee structure — fixed fees for defined work such as divorce agreements, staged fees for litigation. Documents are exchanged securely by email or WeChat, and signing can often be done remotely. If you are overseas, a notarised and apostilled power of attorney usually allows us to act for you in court, although a registry divorce requires both spouses to appear in person.
We are realistic about business-owner divorces: they often involve accounting evidence and take longer than people hope. Our team includes an experienced auditor who can review company records and help the court understand what a business is really worth.
Families with children in Dongguan
Many expat families in Dongguan have children at international or bilingual schools, and a contract ending can suddenly raise the question of where the children will live. We help parents agree practical arrangements early — school, holidays, travel consent and video contact — and, where agreement is not possible, prepare the evidence a court will look at when deciding what is best for the child.
Courts and registries
Dongguan has no county-level districts, so its basic-level people's courts are organised by area rather than by district. The correct court depends on where the defendant is domiciled. Recognition of foreign and Hong Kong judgments goes to the Dongguan Intermediate People's Court. We confirm the right court and the current registry requirements for your case, and handle filing, translation and attendance.
No lawyer can promise a particular result, and we will not. We can give you a clear, honest plan. Contact us to arrange a consultation.
Family courts in Dongguan
Divorce, custody and support cases are generally heard first by the basic people's court covering the town or subdistrict where the defendant is domiciled. Because Dongguan has no county-level districts, basic courts cover groups of towns and subdistricts rather than districts — we confirm the correct court for your address. If the defendant lives outside mainland China, the court of the plaintiff's domicile can often hear a divorce.
Recognition of foreign divorce judgments and Hong Kong–Mainland arrangement applications go to the Dongguan Intermediate People's Court, which also hears appeals.
Marriage & divorce registration in Dongguan
Marriage and agreed-divorce registration is handled by marriage registries under the Dongguan Civil Affairs Bureau. Registrations involving a foreign national can only be handled at a designated registry, and both parties must attend in person. Designated offices, appointment rules and document lists change from time to time, so check the current position before you go — or ask us to check for you. Since 10 May 2025, registration is nationwide: where one partner is a mainland resident, you can use any registry authorised for foreign-related matters anywhere in China, not only one in your hukou city, and the Chinese partner needs only a resident ID card and a signed declaration (no hukou booklet).

Frequently asked questions
Do you have an office in Dongguan?
No. We serve Dongguan clients from our Shenzhen office and by video, and our lawyers travel to Dongguan for meetings or hearings when needed. Most of the work can be done remotely.
My spouse owns a factory in Dongguan. Is the business part of our marital property?
It depends on when and how the business was acquired. Company shares or business income acquired during the marriage are generally community property, even if registered only in your spouse's name. Pre-marital shares are usually separate, though growth during the marriage can raise difficult questions. Valuation often needs accounting evidence.
I work in Dongguan but my spouse has moved back to our home country. Where can I divorce?
If you are domiciled in Dongguan, a Chinese court may be able to hear the case even though your spouse lives abroad, but service overseas can add many months. Filing in your home country may be faster in some cases. We can compare both options with you before you decide.
