Family lawyers for Zhuhai's cross-border and international families
Zhuhai lives with one foot in Macau. Thousands of families have one spouse working across the border in Macau's hotels, casinos or public services while the household lives in Xiangzhou or Hengqin; others commute to Hong Kong over the bridge. Zhuhai also has a growing community of foreign teachers, aviation and yacht-industry professionals, and retirees. Family law here is often cross-border family law.
Please note: we do not have an office in Zhuhai. We serve Zhuhai clients from our Guangzhou office and by video. Our lawyers travel to Zhuhai for meetings, signings or hearings when needed.
Family matters we typically handle for Zhuhai clients
- Macau–mainland and Hong Kong–mainland divorces — deciding where to file, and how orders from one side are used on the other. See cross-border family matters for Zhuhai.
- Divorce for foreigners and mixed-nationality couples. See divorce for foreigners in Zhuhai.
- Child custody and visitation where the parents live on different sides of a border, including school, travel documents and holiday arrangements. See child custody in Zhuhai.
- Child support and maintenance where the paying parent earns in Macau patacas or Hong Kong dollars. See child support in Zhuhai.
- Recognition of foreign divorce judgments for use in Zhuhai.
- Marriage registration for couples where one party is a foreigner or a Hong Kong or Macau resident.
A note on Macau and Hong Kong
Hong Kong and Macau have their own legal systems. For Hong Kong, a specific arrangement in force since 15 February 2022 allows many matrimonial and family judgments to be recognised and enforced on the mainland, and vice versa. Macau and the mainland have their own arrangements on civil and commercial judgments and on service of documents. Which route applies — and whether it is better to file in Zhuhai, Macau or Hong Kong — depends on where each spouse lives, where the property is and where the children go to school. We look at the whole picture before recommending a forum, and work with Macau or Hong Kong lawyers where needed.
How we work with Zhuhai clients
Your first 30-minute consultation is free and confidential, usually by video. We then agree a plan and fees in writing. Most documents can be signed remotely. Clients abroad can often act through a notarised and apostilled power of attorney, while a registry divorce requires both spouses in person.
Children who cross the border
Children in Zhuhai–Macau families often hold documents for both sides and may attend school in one place while a parent works in the other. A good parenting plan deals with these details: where the child lives and studies, who keeps the travel documents, and how holidays are shared. We draft arrangements that can work in practice on both sides of the border.
Courts and registries
Divorce and custody cases generally start at the district people's court where the defendant is domiciled; recognition applications go to the Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court. We check the correct court and current registry requirements for you.
We will not promise outcomes, but we will give you honest, practical advice. Contact us to talk it through.
Family courts in Zhuhai
Divorce, custody and child-support cases are generally heard first by the basic (district) people's court where the defendant is domiciled — Zhuhai's districts are Xiangzhou, Doumen and Jinwan. If the defendant lives outside mainland China (for example in Macau or Hong Kong), the court of the plaintiff's domicile can often hear a divorce.
Recognition of foreign divorce judgments and Hong Kong–Mainland arrangement applications go to the Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court, which also hears appeals. We confirm the correct court for addresses in Hengqin and other special areas.
Marriage & divorce registration in Zhuhai
Marriage and agreed-divorce registration is handled by marriage registries under the Zhuhai Civil Affairs Bureau. Registrations involving a foreign national, and in many cases Hong Kong or Macau residents, are handled only at a designated registry, with both parties in person. Check the current designated office, appointment system and document list before you go — we can confirm them for you. Since 10 May 2025, registration is nationwide: where one partner is a mainland resident, you can use any registry authorised for foreign-related matters anywhere in China, not only one in your hukou city, and the Chinese partner needs only a resident ID card and a signed declaration (no hukou booklet).

Frequently asked questions
My spouse works in Macau and I live in Zhuhai. Where should we divorce?
It depends on where each of you is domiciled, where your property is and where the children live. A Zhuhai court can often hear the case if you are domiciled here, but the order may then need to be used in Macau. We look at where the order will need to work before recommending a forum.
Do you have an office in Zhuhai?
No. We serve Zhuhai clients from our Guangzhou office and by video, and travel to Zhuhai for meetings and hearings when needed.
Can child support be ordered if my ex-partner earns in Macau?
Yes. A mainland court can order child support based on the paying parent's actual income, wherever it is earned, generally 20%–30% of monthly income for one child. The harder question is enforcement if the parent has no assets on the mainland, which is why we plan for enforcement from the start.
