Family law in ZhuhaiWhich court handles it in Zhuhai?
Divorce, custody and child-support cases are generally heard first by the basic (district) people's court where the defendant is domiciled — Zhuhai's districts are Xiangzhou, Doumen and Jinwan. If the defendant lives outside mainland China (for example in Macau or Hong Kong), the court of the plaintiff's domicile can often hear a divorce.
Recognition of foreign divorce judgments and Hong Kong–Mainland arrangement applications go to the Zhuhai Intermediate People's Court, which also hears appeals. We confirm the correct court for addresses in Hengqin and other special areas.
Marriage & divorce registry in Zhuhai
Marriage and agreed-divorce registration is handled by marriage registries under the Zhuhai Civil Affairs Bureau. Registrations involving a foreign national, and in many cases Hong Kong or Macau residents, are handled only at a designated registry, with both parties in person. Check the current designated office, appointment system and document list before you go — we can confirm them for you. Since 10 May 2025, registration is nationwide: where one partner is a mainland resident, you can use any registry authorised for foreign-related matters anywhere in China, not only one in your hukou city, and the Chinese partner needs only a resident ID card and a signed declaration (no hukou booklet).

Recognition of a foreign divorce in China: why it matters
Many people are surprised to learn that a divorce granted by a court in the United States, Canada, Australia, the UK or elsewhere does not automatically take effect in mainland China. If you or your former spouse is a Chinese citizen, or you need to use the divorce in China, the foreign judgment generally has to be recognised by a Chinese court first. Until then, Chinese authorities may still treat you as married.
This page explains the recognition of foreign divorce judgments in China: who needs it, how the procedure works, what documents you need and how long it typically takes.
Who needs recognition?
You will usually need recognition if you divorced outside mainland China and now want to:
- Remarry in mainland China — the marriage registry will generally ask for the recognition ruling
- Sell, transfer or register real estate in China that was held as a married person
- Update hukou, marital status or other official records
- Rely on the divorce in inheritance, property or other proceedings in China
- Resolve a situation where your former spouse remarried or started proceedings in China
Chinese citizens living abroad, foreigners who married Chinese citizens, and families dealing with an estate often all face this step. For a plain-language overview, see our article Is my foreign divorce valid in China?.
Recognition of Foreign Divorce Judgments in Zhuhai: FAQs
Do I need to meet a lawyer in person in Zhuhai for recognition of foreign divorce judgments?
No. We don't have an office in Zhuhai; clients there are looked after by our Guangzhou team by video, phone, WeChat or WhatsApp, and we meet locally or attend Zhuhai courts and registries in person whenever the case requires it.
My spouse works in Macau and I live in Zhuhai. Where should we divorce?
It depends on where each of you is domiciled, where your property is and where the children live. A Zhuhai court can often hear the case if you are domiciled here, but the order may then need to be used in Macau. We look at where the order will need to work before recommending a forum.
Do you have an office in Zhuhai?
No. We serve Zhuhai clients from our Guangzhou office and by video, and travel to Zhuhai for meetings and hearings when needed.
Is a foreign divorce valid in China?
Not automatically. Where a Chinese citizen is involved or the divorce needs to be used in mainland China, the foreign judgment generally must be recognised by a Chinese Intermediate People's Court first. Until then, Chinese authorities may still treat you as married.
Do I need to recognise my foreign divorce before remarrying in China?
In most cases, yes. Marriage registries in mainland China generally ask a divorced Chinese citizen who divorced abroad to show the court's recognition ruling. Check with the registry, but plan for recognition before setting a wedding date.
How long does recognition of a foreign divorce take in China?
It varies by court. A complete, unopposed application often finishes within a few months of acceptance, but missing documents or the need to serve a former spouse abroad can add significant time.
Do I need to come to China to apply for recognition?
Usually not. A Chinese lawyer can file on your behalf with a notarised and apostilled power of attorney. Some courts may ask for identity verification, which can often be arranged remotely or through the notarisation process.
